Grade 1 Music Theory Course Overview
This course is designed to make learning the ABRSM Discovering Music Theory Grade 1 syllabus as simple and engaging as possible. Whether you’re a complete beginner or a parent looking to support a young student, this course provides clear and accessible explanations that will help you build a strong foundation in music theory.

This course is perfect for absolute beginners. It’s also an excellent resource for parents who want to assist their younger piano students with their music theory studies.
How Does it Work?
Each chapter introduces essential elements of music theory, such as notation, pitch, and rhythm. The language used is straightforward, ensuring that learning is effective for students of all ages.
- Weekly live lessons will guide you through each chapter in your ABRSM workbook.
- You’ll have the opportunity to complete exercises in real-time with your teacher, or you can pause the lesson and try the questions on your own before checking your answers at the end.
- The course is designed to let you learn at your own pace while building confidence step by step.
During live lessons, the teacher will answer any questions from students, whether they are asked during the class or through our Facebook student group. In addition, fun worksheets and practice tools will be shared regularly to keep learning engaging.

Grade 2
This course will introduce you to several new music theory elements including ledger line pitch, triplets and harmonic minor keys signatures and scales.
Who is it Suitable For?
It’s perfect for all students that have successfully completed our Grade 1 course and for music students that have passed the ABRSM Grade 1 exam.
It is best suited to ages 10yrs+ and is also great for parents of younger piano students that wish to support them through their musical studies.
How does it work?
Each chapter introduces key elements of music theory including notation, pitch and rhythm. The language is uncomplicated to make the learning effective for all ages.
The weekly live lessons will explain everything you need to know about each Chapter in your ABRSM work book. You will get the opportunity to complete the questions in real time with your teacher or you can pause the video lesson and have a go on your own. Checking your answers at the end of the lesson to make sure that you are on right track. This course will really help you learn at your own pace and build your confidence every step of the way.
During the live lessons I will be happy to answers any questions raised by students during the lesson or from our facebook students page. Further practice tools and additional fun worksheets will also be introduced regularly to keep the learning upbeat. The lessons will be always recorded and available on demand so that you have the flexibility to watch them at your leisure.
The Grade 2 course will also reinforce some of the key points learnt in the Grade 1 syllabus whilst expanding on your knowledge by explaining grouping of notes and rests and exploring different chords in the form of major and minor tonic triads.
Once you have completed the course you will really start to feel that you can translate the music that you see every day and you will definitely be ready to move forward on your musical journey to the Discover Music Theory Grade 3 course.
End of course exams are available to all students but I must stress that they are not complusary. However should you want to give them a go then you will be in very safe hands. - Chapter 2 – Minim and quaver beat time signatures
- Chapter 3 – Triplets and dotted rests
- Chapter 4 – How to group notes and rests correctly
- Chapter 5 – Introducing new Key Signature for A, Bb & Eb Major
- Chapter 6 – Relative minor scales, A,E & D Harmonic
- Chapter 7 – Note intervals in the new keys
- Chapter 8 – Tonic triads and chords for A, Bb, Eb Major & A,E & D Minor
- Chapter 9 – Build on your music vocabulary with new terms and signs
- Chapter 10 – Practice Music theory in context.
- Chapter 11 – Test your knowledge with a practice Exam Paper.
- Further help and support is also available for those students that would like to give the Online Theory Exam ago.
Grade 3
The main focus of this course is to expand your knowledge and understanding of keys signatures and scales to an intermediate level. This is essential as you progress through your music theory journey.
Throughout the course you will be introduced to new theory elements including the demisemiquaver, upbeats, compound time signatures, melodic minors keys and scales, and octave transposition.
Also there are several chapters dedicated to building on your current knowledge. Extensions include ledger line pitch, note intervals and terms and signs to ensure your learning is well paced and easy to understand.
Once you have completed this course you will definitely feel confident and inspired to start our Grade 4 Discover Music Theory Course.
If you would like to take the Grade 3 Music Theory Exam with the Associated Board for the Royal School of Music (ABRSM) then we are happy to offer you free support and guidance through the process. Grade 4
This course is packed full of new music theory elements. Includes how to read notes in the Alto clef and how to use double sharps and flats to create enharmonic equivalent pitch.
New rhythm elements are also introduced in this grade, such as the breve, double dots, duplets and ornamentation.
Many chapters are dedicated to expanding your knowledge and understanding of compound time and advanced keys signatures and scales also.
A key feature in this grade is how the primary chords play a huge part in music composition and you will explore intervals in more details to fully understand how best to identify them with ease.
Once you have completed this course you will feel confident and ready to take your Grade 4 Music Theory Exam with the Associated Board for the Royal School of Music (ABRSM) and progress to Grade 5.
Suitable For:
The Grade 4 course is great for all students that have successfully completed the Discover Music Theory Courses for Grades 1,2 and 3 and wish to continue their studies to an advanced level.
It would also suit those students that studying G.C.S.E music and for anyone that has already passed the ABRSM Grade 3 exam.

- Chapter 4 – Further understanding of Major and Minor Key Signatures up to 5 sharps and flats.
- Chapter 5 – Introducing the Chromatic scale
- Chapter 6 – Expanding on Intervals including augmented and diminished
- Chapter 7 – Exploring primary chords in root position
- Chapter 8 – Instrument families, ranges and clefs including specific instrument direction.
- Chapter 9 – New Italian and French terms and ornamentation interpretation.

Grade 5
This course is packed full of new music theory elements. You will be introduced to irregular time signatures and divisions including quintuplets and sextuplets.
New pitch elements are also introduced in this grade. You will learn how to read the Tenor clef and transpose music effectively between clefs.
Many chapters are dedicated to expanding your knowledge and understanding of advanced key signatures and scales up to 6 sharps and flats including compound intervals.
A key feature in this grade is transposition between key signatures and specific intervals. You will also explore transposing instruments, voice types and ranges. Chords and Cadences are also heavily featured in Grade 5 which will really bring your compositions to life.
Once you have completed this course you will feel confident and ready to take your Grade 5 Music Theory Exam with the Associated Board for the Royal School of Music (ABRSM).
Suitable For:
The Grade 5 course is for students wishing to study advanced music theory and for those students that wish to advance their instrumental qualification beyond Grade 6 with the ABRSM.
It is suitable for all students that have successfully completed the Discover Music Theory Courses for Grades 1,2, 3 and 4. It would also suit those students that studying G.C.S.E music.
Please note that this course only covers elements introduced in the Grade 5 Syllabus and should not be taken as a fast track option for zero to Grade 5 music theory certificate attainment.
